Periodontology is a field of dental surgery dealing with the prophylaxis and treatment of paradontosis. Paradontosis belongs to a group of social diseases. Because of its common occurrence this is a civilizational disease like caries, diabetes, obesity and heart diseases. 

This illness is not a problem of contemporary medicine, it has accompanied the human race for a long time. Archeological research carried out in Europe, within the area of ancient Egypt, China, books by Greek, Roman or Arab physicians/philosophers confirm that assumption.

Epidemiological research shows that more than 90% of adults in our society suffer from this disease. Among city residents only 1% of women and 0.3% of men do not need any treatment in this scope. No persons without paradontic problems have been observed in rural regions.

Paradontosis more frequently appears in children and young people independently of such problems as caries or malocclusion.  The majority of (over 90%) paradontic problems consist of inflammations. The inflammation is limited to tissues visible to patients (gums) or covers some invisible structures of paradontium (bone, ligaments around the tooth).

The reason for paradontosis is the damaging influence of bacteria existing on the tooth surface, existing immune disorders in patients, the impact of risk factors for this disease such as: smoking, stress, genetic factors, some general diseases (hormone disorders, diabetes, blood diseases).

Paradontosis symptoms may include bleeding gums, hypersensitive teeth, unpleasant mouth smell, loosening of teeth intensifying in time (sometimes observed displacements or extended teeth) and finally, tooth loss inseparably associated with bone loss, which makes it difficult or makes it impossible to carry out comfortable dentures (removable dentures and implants require bone support). The final result signifies not only problems in prosthetic rehabilitation but also a bad cosmetic effect, articulation disorders and changes in facial features!

The most frequent mistake made by patients is their conviction that paradontosis is incurable! There is nothing more erroneous and pregnant with consequences!

The method of treating paradontosis depends on its type and stage.

As usual at the beginning we have to remove causes – then effects. To obtain this the treatment starts with removing inflammation by applying systems for cleaning teeth surfaces and removing bacterial toxins (ultrasonic, piezoelectric, pressure devices) for under gum administration of retard drugs (acting up to 6 months), applying laser simulation, administering drugs and preparations for home use. To eliminate the effects of disease e.g. bone loss, weakening ligaments, to strengthen loosened teeth, improve chewing potential and esthetics after curing the inflammation it is necessary to apply a surgical/plastic treatment of paradontosis!

Our clinic specializes in treating this disease using all regeneration/repair techniques available in dentistry allowing us to reconstruct gums, bones and ligaments around the teeth or implants. 

We apply the plastic procedures of covering gum exposures using soft tissue transplants.
